November Update

My comic making roll has slowed to a slow crawl. A combination of crunch-time at work mixed with sleep training an infant has significantly reduced my work time. Not to mention, the increasing financial costs of life is forcing me to focus most of my time on money-making ventures like commissions as opposed to personal work like comics.

Here’s a couple I can show:

Now, I definitely like working on commissions. But I’d love to have free time to continue building my own wild ideas. Alas, money is the captor of my livlihood….

ANYWAYS! Here’s an update of the progress on my next comic Caerulea.

Story outline is pretty much wrapped. Something I’m battling with currently is whether or not to have a flashback from the last third of the story be the prologue to the whole book. Basically, the story is about a crashed alien with amnesia and everyone is running around trying to figure out who or what she is. This flashback is her backstory. What I’m trying to determine is whether that knowledge would be more beneficial for readers upfront or if the revelations would make more of an impact later on, subjecting them to the mystery up until that point.

This is the alien in question:

I continue to sketch all the characters over and over as well. Part of me is trying to get used to drawing them so when it comes time to actually draw the comic, I’ll have them memorized. The other part of me is trying to find ways to simply them more and more so they’re even easier to draw.

I’ve been working on environments as well. These are some sketched of a desert city. Originally I wanted it built into the side of a giant stone plateau, but now I’m leaning towards having it in the center of three different plateaus. Still haven’t settled on an idea.

Environments are definitely a weak point for me. I’m much more character oriented. But getting good at landscapes is something I’d love to do because I love looking at them.

My plan is to continue working on this comic whenever I get some time. Though, other projects are also creeping into my mind…. Mainly projects of the video game variety.

There’s two things I’d love to do for a living. One is write comics. The other is to make games.

I’ve released two comics now, so I’ve proven I can do that! But I haven’t made a game yet (unless you count the crappy ones I made in college) So that might be something I start dabbling around with.

Along with some new sketches and work-in-progress art from Caerulea, you may be seeing some 3D game animations as well. Time will tell.
